Legrand Home + Control app and Philips Hue lights

After installing the Legrand gateway, the Home + Control app was able to instantly recognize and associate 3 Philips Hue smart lights I had running. Everything worked as expected and I was able to control the lights via Home + Control and Apple’s Home app.

Later on I purchased over 10 additional Hue lights and the Hue bridge. I installed and paired them through the official Philips Hue app. I was able to see and control the new lights via the Hue app and the Apple Home app, but I encountered two problems:
1. The official Hue app couldn’t control those three previously connected to Legrand gateway. The app was able was able to identify them somehow, and they were visible within the Hue app, but they were “unreachable”. Meaning there’s no way of controlling them.
2. The Home + Control app didn’t automatically identify any of the new lights, indicating I might be unable to use them with the BTicino Living Now smart light switches and dimmers. (I haven’t tried running the Add a product sequence though)

After performing a hardware reset on the initial 3 Hue bulbs (supposedly disassociating them from the Legrand Gateway), the Hue app was able to recognize them. Now they’re all paired with the Hue bridge and they’re all visible in the Hue app and Apple Home app.

This makes me concerned that there’s no interoperability between Legrand and Philips Hue apps, meaning I can have them running on either Home+Control & Apple Home configuration or Philips Hue & Apple Home configuration. Can you please confirm whether this is correct. Thanks.

Hello again,

Concerning points 1 and 2, I simply think that it’s linked to the fact that the bulbs were on 2 different networks (Hue & Home + Control) and the link is not done in case of the adding of new lights in order not to bring interferences between the 2 networks

I advise you to configure your lights with the Hue app (it should also make them appear in HomeKit), and then add them to Home + Control via the function Add a new product > Other products > Connected lights

It should let you have your lights both in Hue, Home + Control and HomeKit apps

I did configure the lights with the Hue app just as advised. However when I go to Add a new product in Home + Control I get the prompt whether I have the lights already installed. When I click yes the app tells me to perform a factory reset before pairing them with the app.

This isn’t a big problem though as I was able to get the switches in the Apple Home app and can configure them from over there.

Hello,

Thanks for this useful feedback. Indeed it seems logical to me now : a device can only be linked to 1 Zigbee network, so either the Phillips Hub or the Legrand/Bticino gateway

You must decide which control system you want; Hue or Home + Control.

The benefit to using Home + Control is that you can pair Hue lamps with Legrand wireless switches.

The downside to using Home + Control

1) you lose adaptive lighting, and according Leslie, there are no plans to add it. Huge disadvantage.

2) Home + Control cannot control power loss recovery behavior of a Hue lamp. When there is a power outage, once power is restored the Hue lamps will come back on at 100% brightness even if you had them turned off when the power went out. There is a workaround in that you can connect via Bluetooth with the Hue app, but it’s not 100% reliable. I had some Hue lamps paired with Home c Control that refused to connect via Bluetooth while others worked fine.

3) you can’t use the Hue mechanical switch modules with Home + Control and Legrand mechanical modules are not available in all countries.

There are many things that could be improved upon in Home + Control in regard to Hue lamps but it likely won’t happen from what I’ve read here.

Hi Brant, Leslie,

Adding to this thread for weird/unwanted behaviour with Hue lights.

Regarding point 2, I’ve managed to pair first all Hue lights to the Hue BT app, update them, and set power loss recovery, and THEN connect the Hue lights to Legrand gateway. So far no issues, I can control via either Home + Control app, Legrand wireless switches/scene switches, or Hue BT app (to get dynamic scenes or other). Drawback is I can’t use Hue dynamic scenes with Legrand scene switches. Power recovery seems to be OK (tested a few times by tripping the lights CB).

However one strange behaviour is when using Home + Control scenes to turn off the lights:

  • I have several Hue lights (colour+white ambiance), set at warm white/70% brightness
  • I turn them off via a Home+Control scene (or scene switch)
    • Not easily noticeable, but some lights switch to blue or red while turning off –  takes several tries to “see” it
  • I turn the lights back on via the associated Legrand wireless switch (NOT a Home+Control scene/scene switch) – the lights should turn back on to the colour+brightness they were at before they were turned off
  • The lights which switched to blue or red very quickly before turning off actually turn on back to that colour, instead of the warm white which I had previously set

However if I turn the lights off via the associated Legrand wireless switch, it turns back on correctly to the colour it was before – in my case warm white. Interestingly though, it’s always the same 2 lights for me which change colour, one red and one blue, and 100% of the time.

There must be an issue/problem with the “turn off” command sent in scenes to change colour like that. I’ve double-checked the scenes, and they are correctly set.

@Leslie, could you check please?

Cheers,

Fred

Hello Fred,

Thanks for the feedback. Dynamic scenes are not managed by Home + Control. I report it to the developers, I don’t know if it’s something planned and/or possible

Concerning the 2nd bug : for the moment we communicated about the management of ZigBee lights for cold to warm white. A dedicated wireless color switch is planned allowing to correctly manage color lights. This being said, we didn’t set a restriction for ON/OFF switches to pilot colored bulbs

This bug is not a behavior known by developers, they will try to reproduce it following your steps. Also, they are some improvements and fixes for Z3.0 light bulbs planned in the next gateway firmware release. It could also maybe fix this issue

Hi Leslie,

I’m not looking to control the light colour, only to turn them off/on with a scene switch (for example the Sleep scene or the Leave Home/Away scene). If I turn the light off via a scene (in the Home+Control app or with a switch), some lights change colour before turning off, so when I turn it back on it has an unwanted setting. If I turn the light off via an Apple HomeKit scene, or via a switch, it works perfectly.

Did your developers manage to reproduce the bug? Also, do you have any information on the next firmware update? My gateway is on v253.

Thanks!

Fred

Hello Fred,

There is indeed an opened ticket on Netatmo’s side with this problem. The developer assigned to it is off this week, but I’ll send him a message to know the progress about it and I’ll tell you if we need more info from you to help investigate

The v.253 is the latest gateway firmware version. The next one should be a 30x. But for the moment I have no information about an availability date

Hi Leslie,

Any news on the subject? Just noticed the bug happens even with light turned off:

  • Have light set to any color/white temperature/brightness –> setting 1
  • Turn light off with dedicated wireless switch (or Home+Control app) –> NOT via a scene
    • If you turn the light back on with the switch or app, it turns back on to its previously set status (so identical to setting 1)
  • Press the any scene switch (or in app) as long as the scene is set to turn off that specific light in the Home+Control app
  • When turning the light back on via the wireless switch (not a scene switch), for me it switches to blue or red/changes from the previously on setting 1.

Hope it’s clear, let me know.

Cheers,

Fred

Hello Fred,

For the moment the ticket is still to debug. He’s part of a larger Epic concerning fixes and new features for RGB lights. I still don’t have any availability date for it

Hi Leslie,

Thanks for the info. I’m still pretty sure that it’s just the way the scenes are implemented in Home+Control app, as turning the light off via the dedicated wireless switch/directly from the Home+Control app/from Homekit app works normally.

Scenes within Homekit however work normally –> my Homekit “Sleep” or “Leaving home” scenes which turn all the lights off work normally and turning the RGB lights back on after do not create a disco party ^^.

As such, I’m not sure this required a firmware update, just an app update.

Cheers,

Fred

Hello Fred,

I just had a feedback from teams about it :

We did some tests with v.253 firmware version but didn’t reproduce the problem. It’s maybe due to the bulb model or a different software version. This being said, we have some fixes arriving in the next beta version of the gateway. If the client is OK with it, we can push the beta version on his gateway in order him to see if it fixes the problem

So if it’s OK for you please send me a confirmation email via the contact form with the email address of your Netatmo account. I’ll then ask Netatmo teams to do the push

Have a good day,

Hi Leslie,

I just sent you confirmation via the contact form.

For the dev team, I’m using Philips Hue White & Colour Ambiance GU10 lights – Philips software 1.93.11 (latest update). My “home” and “away” scenes configuration are in the screenshots below. The “Home” scene sets all lights to approx 70% brightness, with warm white (second column in the screenshot). However in the Home+Control app I can’t keep the colour/temperature setting in the second column, when I set the toggle to turn the light off, it defaults to the “multicolour” button on the left…

Then when I press the Away switch, 3 out of 4 lights switch to blue/red before turning off…

Thanks!

Fred

Hi Leslie;

I have been following this thread because I too cannot add Phillips Hue lights.  Your post above says to add them as “<span style=”color: #575757; font-family: ‘Segoe UI’, ‘Noto Sans’, sans-serif;”>Add a new product > Other products > Connected lights”.  However my Home + Control App does not have a “Other Products” menu.  The screenshot below shows what I get when I click “Add product”.  Any suggestions?</span>
